Each Friday, I post some relevant (and not-so-relevant) stats about the trip, as well as a little write-up of what it’s like to live out of a van for weeks on end. Here’s where we are overall:
- Total miles driven: 5902
- Total miles by ferry: 489
- Total days on the road: 59
- Total nights in a hotel: 4
- Total miles hiked: 82.3
Here are some interesting stats for this week:
- Fuel stops: 3 (diesel: $5.23 / gallon in Haines, AK; $4.27 in Tok, AK; $4.06 in Fairbanks)
- Technical issues: 1 (The plastic cap on our gray/blackwater dump valve is broken – a consequence of driving on bumpy gravel roads. We’re not sure if this will pose a problem or not – the dump shutoff valves for both black and gray water still work fine so we won’t be leaking wastewater as we drive down the highway or anything.)
- National Park Service sites visited: 1 – Kluane National Park (Canada)
- Bears sighted: 2 (We saw them in the Yukon Territory. We have yet to see a bear in Alaska, though.)
- Reindeer sighted: 3 – at Santa’s house in North Pole, Alaska. I guess they were molting, but they look a lot like zombies from The Walking Dead.
By the time you read this post we will be in Denali National Park. We plan on staying 5 or six days there. We won’t have power, water, or internet there so you probably won’t see any activity on the blog during that time. But I’ll be writing a new post offline each day we’re there and I’ll upload them once we are back in civilization.
