In the middle of nowhere, on the border between Arizona and California, is the Parker Strip. From Phoenix, you drive and drive and drive through the brown desert until you reach a slim green oasis on the banks of the Colorado River. We pulled up to Buckskin Mountain State Park and were amazed by the views from our campsite. We backed up right to the river, it was gorgeous.
We spent two nights at Buckskin Mountain before moving on to Lake Havasu City. I have fond (but foggy) memories of Lake Havasu from Spring Break back in college in the mid-90’s. Of course this time around we were surrounded by elderly snowbirds from the Midwest instead of crazy college kids. At least the London Bridge looks like I remembered it.
We had some amazing views from our campsite at Lake Havasu State Park. The weather was so pleasant in the evening that we had a campfire and watched the boats go by at sunset.
Lake Havasu State Park is walking distance from the bridge area, which was nice because we were able to set up camp and not have to take everything down and put it away when we wanted to go out for a bite or a beer.
I am really enjoying these road trips, I hadn’t realized just how many great weekend getaway opportunities Arizona has to offer. Can’t wait to do some more exploring next month!
