Tröllaskagi and Akureyri

Today's drive was around the Tröllaskagi peninsula.  Despite the name, there were no trolls hanging out by the roadside.  There were plenty of wildflowers, though.

The weather has turned a bit cloudy and chilly, and there is a lot of snow on the mountains in this part of Iceland.  Perfect summer weather for a dip in the pool, right?  Nearly every small town in Iceland has a public pool, and the village of Hofsos has an outdoor one with a particularly spectacular view of the fjord and surrounding mountains.  The pool is heated geothermally so the water temperature was perfect, although the air temp was freezing when we got out!

We stopped for lunch at Siglufjordur, a small fishing village at the north end of the peninsula.  From the restaurant we could watch the boat fleet unloading their catch.

Siglufjordur is connected to the next town to the east by two tunnels that combined are about 6.8 miles long.  After you go through the first tunnel there is a place to pull over and stop and take photos.  Kevin made this photosphere and you can see the two tunnels on either side of the mountains.

Tonight we are in Akureyri, Iceland's second largest town (population ~18,000).  The town center is lively tonight even though it's raining; I think most Icelanders have tomorrow off work -- it's a national holiday commemorating the founding of Iceland as an independent republic (in 1944).
