Today we drove from Akureyri to Lake Myvatn, stopping along the way at Godafoss (the waterfall of the gods).

We arrived in Lake Myvatn around noon. Before we checked into our guesthouse, we decided to explore some of the area around the lake. Grjótagjá cave contains a thermal spring that used to be used for swimming but after a series of volcanic eruptions it got too hot. This was a filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones.

There is evidence of volcanic activity all over this area. Hverfjall is a crater that was formed around 2500 years ago.

After a day full of hiking around, we had a couple of well-deserved beers while relaxing
at the Myvatn Nature Baths, a geothermally heated pool.

Ah...now I get it. Iceland in the summer, as opposed to Phoenix. Temperature is predicted to get up to 120 degrees.
ReplyDeleteYou are smart...very smart. :)
That's exactly how we chose Iceland - it sounded like the perfect place to go during summer to escape the heat!
DeleteI like ""You know nothing, Amanda Salt"!!! That's cool you are actually at the site!
