Smørrebrød

For lunch today we decided to head over to the upscale Torvehallerne Market.  There are over 60 stalls selling ingredients and prepared food.  Our main reason for going there was to try the smørrebrød at the Hallernes Smørrebrød stall.

Smørrebrød literally means "butter and bread" (smør og brød).  In its simplest form, smørrebrød is just a buttered piece of rye bread.  But it has evolved into more elaborate open-faced sandwich creations with toppings that range from the typical herring and salmon to towering stacks of meat, vegetables, remoulades and all kinds of condiments.  I didn't catch photos of our herring and chicken salad smørrebrøds, since we were hungry and they were eaten too quickly.

We topped it off with some pastries that I would normally just call "Danishes" but here they all have different names, obviously.  These swirly cinnamon-type buns are called snegls (snails).  The name may not be appealing but they are delicious!

Either I will come home five pounds lighter from all the walking we have been doing, or I'll be fifteen pounds heavier from all the tasty food we're eating!  We decided to walk across the street to the botanical garden to burn off some calories.

You can go up a spiral staircase to the top of the greenhouse.  It gets progressively warmer and more humid the higher up you go, and our camera lens got completely fogged over.

The surprisingly large collection of cactii almost had us feeling right at home.  The main difference being that it's 65 degrees outside instead of 105 -- no complaints here!
